The manats were introduced on November 1, 1993.
The rubles were replaced by the manats at a rate: 1 Manat = 500 Russian Rubles.
The new series of banknotes were issued in 2005.
The new manats were issued on January 1, 2009. The new manats replaced the old ones at a rate: 1 New Manat = 5000

In Turkmenistan, there is a large difference between the official and black market exchange rates due to the government's strict currency controls. The black market rate can be five, ten, or even more times higher than the official rate.
